Police in the Eastern Region are currently investigating circumstances which led to the death of two individuals following a violent clash between persons engaged in sand-winning and community members at Kraboa a community in the Ayensuano District.
The two a local farmer and a suspected land guard sustained deep cuts when residents and farmers blocked the main road leading to the community in protest of what they describe as the continuous destruction of their lands and farm produce by the sand winners who procure the services of armed land guards.
According to Citi News sources, the protest escalated when the armed land guards opened fire on the protestors who were preventing tipper trucks loaded with sand from moving out of the community.
The free-for-all fight amidst the firing of shots from both sides left dozens of people injured leading to the death of the two.
The timely intervention from the police reinforcement team managed to calm the tension in the community, but the police have yet to make any arrests with regard to the incident.
Meanwhile, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has initiated a process to destool the Coatar chief Barima Okekerebese Asiedu II following the violent incident.
Performing the traditional rites on behalf of Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Apapamhene Osabarima Okogyeaman Apegya Ofori IV cited the continuous unrest and unlawful sand-winning activities as the basis for the destoolment.
