The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Military, has restored calm in Nkwanta and surrounding areas in the Oti Region following renewed communal clashes.
The clashes reportedly linked to a communal dispute, resulted in the tragic loss of five lives and left five others injured. Eight buildings and one shop were destroyed during the unrest.
The injured are receiving medical care, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue for preservation and further investigation.
To promote peace, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) engaged the three local chiefs via phone, urging them to work with security agencies to maintain law and order. On the ground, the Oti Regional Police Commander has been holding meetings with chiefs, opinion leaders, and community members as part of ongoing peace-building efforts.
In a statement issued on January 17 and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the Police Service reaffirmed its commitment, alongside the Military, to ensuring the safety and security of residents.
The statement assured the public, particularly those in Nkwanta and its environs, of continued collaboration between the security forces. Investigations into the cause of the disturbances are ongoing as authorities work to prevent further violence.
