Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has donated 250 packets of roofing sheets, totalling 5,000 pieces, along with ridge caps, to support traders affected by the recent fire at Kantamanto Market in rebuilding their businesses.
The donation was presented on his behalf by former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover and his team.
Earlier, Dr Bawumia contributed GH¢200,000 to assist the traders in their recovery efforts.
Speaking to Channel One News, Titus Glover emphasised the importance of traders securing insurance to protect against future disasters.
He also reiterated that Dr Bawumia would provide CCTV cameras to enhance security once the market reconstruction is completed.
“I want to remind the traders what His Excellency the Vice President said on the day of his visit that they should take insurance very seriously and as much as this inferno has become very rampant, it is important they take insurance coverage over their activities that they do here. The issue of our security is also paramount.
“There is a need for the traders to have their internal security arrangement. He did promise that when the reconstruction is done, he will also support them with CCTV cameras, that is the silent police so that we will be able to monitor all the activities that go on here,” he stated.
The Financial Secretary of the Kantamanto Market, Yaw Sarpong, expressed gratitude for the generous support of 250 packets of roofing sheets.
“He came here and presented an amount of GH¢200,000 to us, which is very good. We thought he would not come here again. Fortunately, he is here giving us 250 packets of iron sheets which is very good enough to roof our structure. We thank him so much,” he said.
