The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to commit themselves wholeheartedly to addressing the pressing needs of their constituents and advancing Ghana’s development.
Speaker Bagbin’s remarks were delivered during an orientation session organised for first-time MPs, aimed at equipping them with the tools and insights necessary for their legislative duties.
In his address, Speaker Bagbin reminded the new MPs of the profound sacrifices their constituents have made to elect them as their representatives in Parliament.
He urged them to respect this trust by fulfilling their responsibilities with diligence, integrity, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of the people they serve.
“You must honour the sacrifices made by your constituents, who have entrusted you with this great responsibility,” he emphasised. “Their lives, hopes, and aspirations are now closely tied to the decisions you make and the actions you take in this House.”
Bagbin stressed that MPs who fail to meet the expectations of their constituents risk not only losing their trust but also missing out on divine blessings.
“”It is not fair at all and the Almighty God himself will not bless you because you don’t need that blessing,” he cautioned. “Whatever you sow, you shall reap. If you fail those who look up to you, you ultimately fail yourself.”
The Speaker painted a picture of the significance of an MP’s role, describing lawmakers as role models and custodians of the future.
He noted that many constituents, especially in rural areas, have not only voted for their MPs but have also defended and supported them through personal sacrifices, even at great risk to themselves.
“You are a role model. The lives of so many people depend on you,” Bagbin stated passionately. “Don’t fail them. This is what touches my heart. When you go around and see how people are fighting for you—not just during elections but even today in the villages, defending you with their lives, and you sit here taking it easy and toying with their future, it is not fair. The Almighty God Himself will not bless you if you do this.”
