Some Abeka residents in the Okaikwei Central constituency are protesting the declaration and swearing in of Patrick Boamah as their Member of Parliament (MP).
They have taken to the streets in a fiery protest after the parliamentary seat, initially declared for their candidate Baba Sadiq, was declared for Patrick Boamah following a re-collation of votes.
Boamaoh who was the constituency’s incumbent MP was officially declared the winner for the constituency with 21,099 votes, defeating the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate Baba Sadiq, who polled 19,368 votes.
This declaration followed a High Court ruling in Accra that directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results in several constituencies, including Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South, by January 6, 2025.
But the demonstrators, who are demanding justice for Baba Sadiq, the NDC candidate, claim that he was unfairly stripped of his position.
The protest escalated as residents burned car tyres along the Abeka stretch, causing significant disruption.
A fire truck dispatched to extinguish the flames had its windscreen shattered by the angry crowd, forcing it to retreat.
The situation remains tense as residents continue to call for the reinstatement of Baba Sadiq, urging authorities to address their grievances and ensure a fair resolution.
Nii Lartey a resident noted that they would not accept Boamah as their MP.
He therefore indicated that it was either Sadiq was declared their MP or a rerun was declared.
“It is two things. Either they put Baba Sadiq as MP for us or they conduct a rerun,” he stated leading the chant “No Baba, no MP.”
