Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria has been inaugurated as the new Regional Chief Imam of the Muslim community in the Ashanti region.
This follows the passing of the former Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheik Abdul Mumin Haroun on December 17, 2024.
Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun died at age 74. He had led the Muslim community of the region for 13 years.
The announcement and auguration took place at a ceremony supervised by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu in Kumasi. The ceremony also marked the final funeral rites of the former Regional Imam.
In attendance were President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, government officials, religious leaders, and chiefs.
Among the duties of the Ashanti Regional Imam are to lead prayers, provide spiritual guidance and promote solidarity among the Muslims within the region.
This solidarity extends beyond shared beliefs to transcend tribal, sectarian, and political differences, aiming to forge a cohesive community.
He is also supposed to uphold integrity, impartiality, and fairness in his leadership setting a benchmark for others to emulate.
He was presented with a Certificate of Recognition by the National Chief Imam. This gesture represents an official approval of his appointment.
Sheikh Abass Karaara was also inaugurated as the Deputy Regional Imam to assist the Regional Chief Imam in the performance of his duties.
