The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed regret over the chaos that occurred on January 7, 2021, during the election of the Speaker for the 8th Parliament.
Speaking during the dissolution of the 8th Parliament, Bagbin condemned the actions of certain members who attempted to disrupt the secret balloting process. He described their conduct as “regrettable,” emphasizing that it tarnished the honour and dignity of the House.
Bagbin also called on Ghanaians to forgive Parliament for the actions of those involved, acknowledging that the incident was a violation of the integrity of the legislative process.
“Honourable members, let me underscore the debacle that happened on the 7th of January 2021. I am referring to the unruly behaviour of some Members of Parliament which caused chaos and commotion in parliament including the violation of the dignity and aura of parliament with the intrusion of armed soldiers on the floor and the breaches of the sanctity of a vote leading to my election as Speaker of Parliament.
“And these are instances that are regrettable and I want to on your behalf apologise to the good people of Ghana to forgive us for our sins,” he stated.
