The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has urged traders across the country’s markets to equip their trading centres with fire extinguishers to help curb the frequent fire outbreaks.
In an interview with Channel One News, DO II Nibunu Callistus, the Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, emphasized the importance of shop owners acquiring fire extinguishers and undergoing proper training from Fire Service officers.
He noted that such measures could significantly reduce the spread of fires in markets.
His appeal follows a devastating fire outbreak at Kantamanto Market and other locations, which destroyed properties worth millions of Ghana cedis, leaving many traders counting their losses.
“We advise market women, households, businesses and shops to acquire fire extinguishers and at best get in touch with the Fire Service for us to train them on how to use the fire extinguisher.
“We do advise homes when we do our door-to-door campaigns. We advise them to ‘get a fire extinguisher and get a qualified person to train you on how to use it such that in the early stages of a fire, you can even start fighting the fire while you call the Fire Service to come and assist’,” he said.
