Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson has expressed utmost disagreement with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s assertion that the country is not broke.

President Akufo-Addo during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, January 3, 2025, reassured Ghanaians that the country is not in financial distress and that its economy remains resilient despite both global and domestic challenges.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the country’s economic foundations are strong and capable of recovery, providing confidence in the nation’s ability to navigate through current difficulties.

Speaking on Big Issue on Saturday, January 4, Jackson reiterated that the country is still in financial distress as there are loans to be settled.

According to Jackson, the country has not overcome its economic challenges as it relies on borrowing for basic needs. He asserted that other countries are unwilling to lend Ghana money.

“How can you say we are out of the woods when we can’t balance a budget? When we have to borrow to consume, borrow to do everything. How can you say we are out of the woods when before COVID, outside the multilateral and bilateral agencies people were ready to lend money to us? Today we are a pariah among nations,” he said.

He emphasised that while the country has made progress from a very dire economic situation, it is still far from being fully recovered.

“Three days ago we were down on our knees. I say that this economy was in a coma. We’ve been resuscitated, we’ve been taken off life support but we are still in intensive care and anybody who says that Ghana is not broke, is not being realistic,” he stated.
