The People’s National Party (PNP) is calling for a constitutional review to allow for the inclusion of former Heads of State, to serve as members of the Council of State.

This, according to PNP, will enable former Presidents and Vice Presidents to significantly contribute their knowledge and experience acquired from their time in office, to the governance of the country.

“Looking forward, the PNP proposes a constitutional amendment to include a clause allowing former Presidents and their Vice Presidents to serve as members of the Council of State. Their wealth of experience and insights can contribute significantly to the growth and development of our nation.”

In reaction to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address delivered on January 3 2025, PNP in a press statement signed by its Chairperson, Janet Asana Nabla, commended the President for for his immense contribution to the educational sector, by implementing the Free Senior High School Policy during his administration.

“Foremost among your policies is the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program. This transformative policy not only provided an opportunity for all pupils to access secondary education but also eliminated the inequities of the selective senior high school system.

“This initiative, a first of its kind since the inception of our democracy, has undoubtedly marked a milestone in our educational system and deserves commendation.”

The statement highlighted the passage of the Affirmative Action Law during Akufo Addo’s tenure, a move which aimed to prioritise the inclusion of women in the political terrain.

Despite lauding the outgoing administration for its contributions to the socio-economic development of the country, PNP underscored the high cost of living and unemployment faced during the NPP’s tenure.

It tasked the incoming NDC administration to take responsibility for failing to provide a solution to alleviate these challenges.
