The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to call off its strike to allow for further engagement.

This directive follows a closed-door meeting between GTEC and CETAG, held to discuss CETAG’s concerns after they declared a strike on Thursday, January 2.

In an address to the press after the meeting, the Director General of GTEC, Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, described CETAG’s strike action as poorly timed and unproductive.

He urged CETAG to call off the strike and engage in further discussions, assuring them that GTEC is committed to addressing their concerns.

“As a matter of fact, this is not happening just in a sudden but we had to start with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission doing the mapping for about one to two months at a very high cost borne by GTEC.

“Today, if for some reason, even informed by the historical doubts that have characterised this process, CETAG wants to declare a strike, we find it extremely unfortunate that you are withdrawing all services, which means a total shutdown of the institutions.

“This is something that GTEC is totally against. So we’ve asked them to go back and reconsider their decision at best to call off the strike,” he stated.

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared its intention to initiate an indefinite strike starting Thursday, January 2, 2025.

This announcement was made following an Emergency National Council meeting convened by CETAG on Monday, December 30, 2024.

In a statement released on December 31, CETAG clarified that this decision is a result of previous strike notices issued on September 26, 2024, and December 23, 2024, which the National Labour Commission (NLC) has not addressed.

CETAG emphasized that this course of action is deemed necessary due to the government’s ongoing breach of signed agreements and the failure to implement the compulsory arbitration award issued by the NLC on May 2, 2023.
