The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has criticised President Akufo-Addo over the awarding of some state officials during the 2024 Ghana National Honours and Awards.

According to Nketiah, some of the awardees do not deserve the national state awards conferred on them.

In his address at the 43rd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution, Nketiah called for legislation to regulate the organisation of Ghana National Honours and Awards.

“State awards are serious businesses. They must be reserved for people of distinction, people who have fought for a good course. If we award state honours to vigilante boys and girls then that is what we are teaching the youth, that after all, it is alright to pick weapons and shoot at people.

“That after all, it is alright to loot state coffers when you are given the opportunity to serve as a minister.

“I want to tell the rest of Ghanaians that it is about time we establish a proper committee backed by law that will help to determine who should earn a national award,” he stated.

On December 30, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo conferred National Honours and Awards on distinguished individuals for their exceptional service, hard work, sacrifices, and contributions to national development.

Speaking at the ceremony, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, President Akufo-Addo encouraged the youth to draw inspiration from the awardees’ achievements and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress. He also urged the recipients to continue striving for greater heights in their respective fields.

This event was particularly significant as it marked the last major occasion of President Akufo-Addo’s administration before he departed from office.
