The Member of Parliament (MP)- elect for Dome Kwabenya, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu has pledged to work diligently for her constituents, stressing that hard work is crucial to her retaining the seat in subsequent elections.
This came after she was officially declared the winner of the parliamentary polls in Dome-Kwabenya.
Addressing the media, Akurugu expressed gratitude to her constituents for their trust and confidence in her and assured them that she would not relent in her efforts to serve their interests.
“Now I am the MP-elect. The next thing is to start work. Dome-Kwabenya has always been for the NPP and this is the first time the NDC has taken that seat. It is hard work that will make the people maintain me for a long. So, it is all going to be hard work and the hard work starts today,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) officially declared Akurugu after its declaration for a rerun in an outstanding polling centre in the constituency.
Akurugu’s announcement resolves a controversy that arose after the EC called for a rerun of elections at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre within the constituency, a move rejected by the NDC.
Initially, the EC declared Faustina Akurugu the winner, but later questioned the validity of some pink sheets from the constituency, citing non-compliance with electoral standards. This led to the call for a rerun.
Following an internal investigation, the EC confirmed that Akurugu secured 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Mike Oquaye Junior, who garnered 50,669 votes.
