The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has provided clarification on the recent cancellation and withholding of results for candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, December 30, 2024, John Kapi, Head of Public Relations for WAEC, outlined the measures being taken to address malpractice and ensure the integrity of the examination process.
WAEC’s provisional results revealed that 4,108 candidates had their subject results cancelled, with 781 results withheld for further investigation. Among these, 483 candidates had their entire results annulled for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall, while 209 were flagged for other suspected offences.
Explaining the sanctions, Mr. Kapi noted that cases involving cancelled results were largely “routine” and based on candidates’ admissions of misconduct.
“Those whose entire results were cancelled were 483 for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall while 209 had their entire results withheld for other suspected offences. For those whose results have been cancelled, these are what we call routine cases we encounter in the course of the examination where the candidates in their statement admit that they have indeed committed that crime and therefore we bring the sanction against them.
“So, for them, we have remedial measures we are going to put in place, and they will have to rewrite the same examination.
However, he distinguished withheld results as “non-routine cases” that require further investigation.
“For those whose results have been withheld, these are what we term non-routine. They are the ones that are reported to us by the examiners.
“We cannot tell exactly the nature of their offence, so we have withheld them and do our investigation to see if indeed they have breached any of our rules. If they do, then we apply the sanctions that go with it. If they don’t, then we release the results for them,” he stated.
