President-elect John Dramani Mahama and Kenyan President William Ruto have pledged to deepen Ghana-Kenya relations, focusing on trade, investment, and regional integration.
The two leaders met on December 28, 2024, in Narok County, Kenya, where they discussed expanding collaboration across key sectors and advancing intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
During their discussions, they highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in driving economic growth and mutual prosperity.
“Kenya will strengthen its partnership with Ghana to include additional sectors such as trade and investment, agriculture, mining, tourism, and oil and gas,” said President Ruto.
“This will create broader opportunities for our people and foster shared prosperity.”
President Mahama underscored his commitment to regional trade integration, emphasizing the transformative potential of AfCFTA. He expressed a strong resolve to enhance ties between the two nations.
“This was a valuable opportunity to discuss regional integration, continental security, and how we can collectively maximize the benefits of AfCFTA,” Mahama noted. “As a former Chair of the African Union’s high-level committee on trade, I remain dedicated to expanding trade between Ghana and Kenya under the AfCFTA framework.”
President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to bolstering ties with Ghana and highlighted opportunities in agriculture, mining, energy, and tourism. He also thanked Mahama for supporting Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission chairmanship, calling it a significant gesture of regional solidarity.
In conclusion, Mahama extended an invitation to President Ruto to attend his swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2025, in Accra, which Ruto graciously accepted.
