The Electoral Commission (EC) has reiterated that the parliamentary results for the Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North constituencies are invalid and unenforceable.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, December 19, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa revealed that the announcement of these results was made under duress, with electoral personnel facing threats and the destruction of ballot papers during the process.
Out of 12 constituencies requiring the re-collation of parliamentary results, three—Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North—have successfully undergone the process.
Madam Jean Mensa emphasized that the collation process in Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North failed to follow proper procedures, further rendering the results unacceptable.
“In the case of Okaikwei Central, a winner was declared without collating results from 31 polling stations. In the case of the Ablekuma North constituency, a winner was declared without collating results from 62 polling stations.
“This is unacceptable. It is important to note that the declarations made by our staff were made under threat and the Commission considers this illegal. Those declarations, as well as others that have gone on in other constituencies, will not be upheld by the Commission.”
Background
Several constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central, experienced violence during the collation of results in the just-ended elections.
The relocation of the collation venue to the Police Training School was marked by unrest and disputes during the aggregation and delegation of results in these constituencies.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) contested the announcement of these results, asserting that the results already declared at the polling stations should not be subject to re-collation.
