Ruben Amorim has expressed disappointment that Marcus Rashford did not approach him directly before announcing his desire to leave Manchester United.
The foreword is set to miss the Red Devils’ Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham on Thursday, following his exclusion from the squad for the Manchester derby.
Rashford’s future at Old Trafford has been cast into doubt after the 27-year-old declared on Tuesday that he is seeking a “new challenge.”
Amorim addressed the situation on Wednesday, emphasizing his belief in Rashford’s talent and his commitment to helping the player rediscover his best form.
“We are better with Marcus Rashford, that is simple. This club needs big talent, and he is a big talent. My focus is to support him and push him to perform at the highest level,” Amorim said. “Nothing has changed; Marcus is still a Manchester United player.”
Despite Amorim’s remarks, Rashford’s comments have reportedly attracted interest from clubs worldwide ahead of the January transfer window. Manchester United is said to value him at over £40 million, though a loan deal is less likely as the club works to comply with financial regulations.
Rashford has long been linked with a move to Spain, with Barcelona previously expressing interest. Paris Saint-Germain held talks with his representatives in the past, though a January bid is considered unlikely. Within the Premier League, clubs such as Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City could be potential suitors. Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s top clubs, including Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ahli, are expected to show interest.
Amorim admitted he had not yet spoken with Rashford but wished the player had raised his concerns privately. “If it were me, I would speak with the manager. But let’s focus on Tottenham,” he said. “At the moment, I’ll decide what to do—I’m a little emotional about this.”
Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho, dropped alongside Rashford for the Manchester derby, has returned to the squad after impressing in training. “He trained well and seems a little upset with me, which is perfect. I would feel the same. He’s ready for this game,” Amorim noted.
However, United suffered another setback with Mason Mount, who consulted a specialist on Wednesday after sustaining an injury during the Manchester derby. “He’s sad, and we need to support him,” Amorim said.
