Senior Russian General Igor Kirillov, head of the country’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, has been killed in Moscow.
Kirillov and his assistant died when a bomb, hidden inside a scooter, detonated as they exited an apartment building early on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
The explosion occurred in south-east Moscow, approximately four miles (6.5km) from the Kremlin.
According to Russian media, the device was remotely triggered and may have contained the equivalent of 300 grams of TNT.
Photos from the scene reveal significant damage to the building’s entrance, with scorch marks, shattered windows, and debris scattered across the area.
Kirillov’s death comes just one day after Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) sentenced him in absentia for allegedly using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Western nations had previously sanctioned Kirillov for his involvement in the Ukraine war, with the UK accusing him of “helping deploy… barbaric weapons.”
