The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has launched an investigation into a fire outbreak at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools, which housed the Ablekuma North Constituency ballot boxes.
The fire occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, December 17, 2024, reportedly starting inside the school’s library, which had been temporarily converted into a storage area for the ballot boxes.
Eyewitnesses, many of whom live close to the school, described waking up to thick smoke and flames engulfing the building.
In a statement, the Police assured the public that those responsible for the fire would be arrested and prosecuted. They urged citizens to remain calm while investigations into the incident continue.
The destruction of the ballot boxes has further escalated tensions surrounding the already controversial Ablekuma North parliamentary race.
The contest is between Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Both candidates have claimed victory, further complicating the situation.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to re-collate the parliamentary results for Ablekuma North, after initially declaring Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC as the winner. The EC has since stated that the declaration was made under duress and cannot stand.
This fire outbreak adds to the heightened tensions following recent post-election disturbances. As of now, 132 suspects have been arrested nationwide in connection with these incidents.
Forty-five of the suspects have been remanded into custody, 71 are on police enquiry bail, and 16 have been granted court bail.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability, urging the public to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations.
