At least six shops containing watermelons and other perishable goods have been ravaged by fire at the Bantama Racecourse Market in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

The fire, which broke out late last night, destroyed goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis, leaving affected traders devastated.

Victims are calling for immediate support and improved safety measures to prevent future occurrences.

“We got a call [on Monday] that this place was in flames. We thought it was the other side because they sell food there. Another piece of information reached us that it is our place. We sell watermelon. The owners of the next three shops sell apples. They have a cold room where they keep their apples. There’s also a cold store behind us.

“The Ghana National Fire Service had almost extinguished the fire when we arrived. All our goods are burnt. I had GHC15,000 worth of goods in there. I also had some personal belongings there. We are pleading with the public to assist us with any form of support they can,” Akua Kobi, an affected trader stated.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
