The founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has warned that the leadership of President-elect John Mahama will play a crucial role in determining whether Ghana can avoid the threat of a military regime.
Speaking during a visit to Mahama’s office, Ayariga emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in governance to safeguard Ghana’s democracy and prevent potential unrest.
He urged Mahama to focus on addressing the concerns of Ghanaians and to prioritise the nation’s stability over political affiliations.
“The leadership this time around will determine whether the major political parties are going to have a say or we are going to run back to a military regime. If you perform well Ghana will move with democracy, if you don’t, then the military will rather come in and say ‘Look we don’t even trust the political parties anymore’.
“If you look at the election this time, the voter apathy has gone up. Many Ghanaians didn’t want to vote again. I said one thing in many of my campaigns. I said the election is going to be determined by two factors; the die-hard members of National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the die-hard members of New Patriotic Party (NPP),” he stated.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana on Monday, December 9 officially declared John Dramani Mahama as the President-elect following the 2024 general elections.
The announcement was made after a thorough collation of results from all 276 constituencies across the country.
Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a decisive victory with 6,328,397 votes representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%, marking a significant comeback to the presidency after his previous term ended in 2017.
