The leadership of the Workers Union of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region has called off its strike and resumed water supply to customers following the intervention of key stakeholders.
Management stated that they have received assurances addressing their concerns over what they described as the unlawful demolition of bungalows belonging to senior company directors by a private developer.
While addressing the press, they confirmed the withdrawal of their industrial action and the resumption of water production and supply after days of service disruption.
“We just ended the crunch meeting called by the directors of the company and it is in response to the treaties that we have received from key stakeholders within the Ashanti region and the country as a whole concerning the industrial action that we took three days ago. Essentially the plea is that we back down on our demands and return to production and supply of water to the people of Asanteman. We have received their treaties, and the union has acceded to their call.
“The action that we took is actually in solidarity with the people of Asanteman because we as a workers union of the GWL are stewards and trustees of the assets of the company which we are holding in trust for tomorrow’s people who are Ghanaians. We believe that the siege that was staked at the bungalows of our managers is a clear show of impunity and if we did not stand by our people whose security and safety were compromised in the process, then our presence as a water production firm in this region is of no value.
“We want customers to be assured that we did not intend to hurt them, our actions were not meant to inconvenience them. It was a necessary evil that must be undertaken for the future of this company and Asanteman if we have to produce water for them. So, we are glad that we have to return to supply, which is immediately, some of our stations have started already,” stated Emmanuel Okpoti Koduah, Vice Chairman of the union.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) had earlier suspended its water supply to some communities in the Ashanti Region following the demolition of staff bungalows by a private developer.
