Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has reminded his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that political power belongs to the people and not to the political elites.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service at the Assemblies of God church in Accra on Sunday, Mahama emphasised the importance of humility and accountability in leadership.
“He has done good for Ghana because he has restored the sovereignty and the power of the people of Ghana. We’ve practiced democracy since 1992. We turned the political elites and I will say including myself, all of us who God has given the opportunity to lead this country, we have grown in arrogance and selfishness and we have believed that the power that we wielded over the people belongs to us ourselves and did not recognise that it was God who gave it to us temporarily,” Mahama stated.
Mahama further warned that the same scrutiny and accountability that led to the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could be directed at his administration if they fail to recognise the people’s power.
“So God has made us know that power belongs to the people. It should serve as a lesson to those of us coming into government that the same stick that Takyi has been beaten with Ghanaian people are reserving it for Baah,” he added.
