The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has issued a word of caution to the leadership and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to avoid complacency following the party’s decisive victory in the December 7 general elections.
While acknowledging the significance of the win, Suhuyini emphasised that the overwhelming margin of victory also underscores the high expectations Ghanaians have for the incoming NDC government and its President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.
In an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Suhuyini reflected on the implications of the electoral outcome, noting that it carries both a mandate for change and a weighty responsibility.
He cautioned the NDC to temper celebrations with sober reflection, recognising that the electorate’s endorsement comes with the demand for effective governance and transformative leadership.
Suhuyini attributed the NDC’s victory to widespread dissatisfaction with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in government.
He pointed to what he described as the NPP’s abysmal leadership style, which he argued often alienated and provoked the citizenry. This, he suggested, created an environment where voters were motivated to reject the NPP’s approach and opt for a change in leadership.
“It is a victory that requires reflection and the funfair should be over by now. We need to understand the level of responsibility that has been placed on the President-elect and on the shoulders of the NDC. The margin of victory should not let us loss sight of the fact that the expectation is also that high.
“The NPP was abysmal in government and their style of leadership in many instances, provoked people and I am sure that it is that provocation that has manifested in the endorsement that the NDC got and people have assigned this victory to apathy but if you look across the country, the apathy was universal and did not just affected only the NPP strongholds.”
