The Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to engage in a deep and thorough reflection to identify and rectify the mistakes that led to its defeat in the December 7 general elections.
According to him, the outcome of the polls should serve as a wake-up call for the party to reevaluate its principles, strategies, and governance style to regain the trust of the electorate.
The NPP suffered a heavy loss in both the presidential and parliamentary elections, as confirmed by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9.
The EC declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the president-elect, securing 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55 percent of the valid votes cast. This was a decisive victory over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, who garnered 4,657,304 votes, translating to 41.61 percent.
The NPP’s parliamentary performance was equally disappointing, with the party so far winning only 80 seats, compared to the NDC’s commanding majority of 185 seats in Parliament.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr. Adomako Kissi described the NDC’s emphatic victory as a clear indication that the NPP must revisit its foundational principles and values.
According to him, the party has strayed from its core tenets, which initially inspired individuals like himself to join its ranks.
Dr. Adomako Kissi reminisced about the NPP’s early days, noting that its foundational ideals of service, integrity, and inclusivity were what drew him and many others to the party.
He expressed concern that the party has veered away from these values, succumbing instead to what he termed “monecracy,” where financial influence appears to overshadow merit and principle in decision-making processes.
“When people spoke the truth, they were rather vilified, and I suffered injuries largely because I felt that certain things were a departure from our very core and I think it is time to go back to what our party was under the likes of Kofi Abrefa Busia and Joseph Boakye Danquah because that is what attracted me to the NPP.
“When I decided to join the NPP, there were some core things that made me join and I think that we need to go back to them I will throw the challenge to the base because we all need to do a reflection and come to what we were and reduce the ‘monecracy.’ Certain decisions were right because people had money but we have now realised that doesn’t work.”
