Members of the Zongo Vote Campaigners, a Pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group, have urged the leadership of the party to urgently begin a stocktaking exercise to evaluate and identify the root causes of voter apathy that resulted in the party’s defeat in the just-ended elections.
The group is concerned about the massive voter apathy that rocked the party’s strongholds and emphasized that the NPP must not engage in blame games but rather resort to finding a solution.
Low voter turnout, largely due to voter apathy, significantly impacted the NPP’s performance in the Ashanti and Eastern regions and other stronghold areas of the party.
Speaking at a news conference in Kumasi, on December 12, the Secretary of the group, Alhaji Abdul Mumin Castro, said that although the elections have ended, the leadership of the party must take steps to identify the lapses that resulted in the loss and make recommendations to right the wrongs for the future.
He added, “Although we don’t have to indulge in blame games, we want to urge the party’s top leadership to as a matter of urgency hold a stocktaking exercise by evaluating and identifying the root causes of the massive voter apathy. Especially in our strongholds and make appropriate recommendations”.
The group has declared its loyalty and continuous support for the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The group also commended Dr Bawumia for conceding defeat to the President-Elect, John Dramai Mahama, and accepting the presidential election results in good faith.
Alhaji Castro further said, “You have demonstrated a sense of patriotism over individualism. It showcases your humility, maturity, and civility. This is indeed a dignifying act worthy of emulation in the interest of democratic consolidation.”
The Zongo Vote Campaigners have also strongly assured Dr Bawumia of the group’s continuous solidarity and that it remained extremely optimistic about his vision and policies.
The group also extended its gratitude to its patron, Hajia Samira Bawumia for her resilience and hard work and encouraged her to continue to support her husband who they hope will lead the NPP for the 2028 elections and become the first Muslim President in Ghana.
