Tensions have flared up in Weija Gbawe as supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have besieged the Electoral Commission’s premises calling for the re-declaration of the parliamentary results.

This comes after Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was announced the Member of Parliament election for the Weija-Gbawe Constituency during the 2024 general elections.

Jerry Shaib polled 32,608 votes to clinch the seat. His closest rival, Felix Odartey Lamptey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), garnered 30,460 votes in the tightly contested race.

However, the Presiding Member of the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Wilfred Ayitey Blankson, stated that the NDC is protesting some challenges in the parliamentary figures, which led to Jerry Ahmed Shaib of the NPP being declared the winner.

Ayitey Blankson, in an interview with Citi News, expressed worry that the Electoral Commission’s Office is closer to the assembly and things can escalate, leading to the destruction of the assembly’s properties hence his call on the leadership of the EC to resolve the matter.

“We are witnessing what is happening in other municipalities and regions. We don’t want anything to happen in Weija Gbawe. We are for peace and we don’t want our toil and the justice we deserve to be taken for granted.

“The situation currently at the assembly is bad. The military and the police are there but the people keep trooping in and the municipal assembly is close to the municipal assembly and we don’t want any untoward to happen,” he stated.
