The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is disputing the results of six constituencies in the Ashanti Region, asserting that it has secured victory in those seats as well.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) had set an ambitious target of securing 85% of the votes in the region, while the NDC aimed for 35%. Both parties sought to expand their parliamentary representation in the Ashanti Region, which comprises 47 constituencies.

Before the 2024 elections, the NDC held four seats: Asawase, Ejura-Sekyedumase, New Edubiase, and Sekyere Afram Plains. The NPP controlled 42 seats, while the remaining seat was occupied by an Independent MP from the Fomena Constituency.

In the 2024 elections, the NPP lost four constituencies—Adansi Asokwa, Adansi Akrofuom, Ahafo Ano South East, and Obuasi East—to the NDC. As a result, the NDC retained its initial four seats and gained four additional constituencies.

The NDC has also declared victory in the Ahafo Ano South West and Ahafo Ano North constituencies. Furthermore, the party is challenging the results in four constituencies: Atwima Mponua, Obuasi West, Offinso North, and Afigya Kwabre North.

“There were four that were declared by the EC and it is believed that there is some miscalculation with some figures. These constituencies are Atwima Mponua, Obuasi West, Offinso North, and Afigya Kwabre North constituencies. In most of these constituencies, President Mahama took a very commanding lead.

“In the Ashanti Region, it is very unlikely for someone to vote for a presidential candidate and not vote for the parliamentary candidate as well. We have done all our analysis and we have been able to trace where the errors came in from. We will pursue that matter in court once the EC has done the official declaration as far as these four seats are concerned”, stated Dr Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Secretary, NDC.

Low voter turnout, largely due to voter apathy, significantly impacted the NPP’s performance in the region. Party leadership has expressed concern over losing key parliamentary seats, including one to an Independent Candidate in the Asante Akim North Constituency.

“By and large, everything is gone for the presidential one but as for Ahafo Ano North, we have already won the seat. The voter turnout was very bad for us. We will go to the drawing board and put our things together for the next election”, Kwame Adom Appiah, Ashanti Regional Secretary, NPP

In the presidential race, the NPP’s 2024 candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, secured 1,366,800 votes—down from Nana Akufo-Addo’s 1,795,824 votes in 2020, representing a decline of 429,024 votes.

The NDC, meanwhile, increased its votes from 653,149 in 2020 to 697,076 in 2024, marking a gain of 43,927 votes.

With the NDC steadily making gains in the NPP’s stronghold in both presidential and parliamentary elections, staunch NPP supporters are growing increasingly concerned about this trend.
