The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Damongo Constituency, has expressed strong disapproval and concern over a purported declaration of the parliamentary results for Damongo Constituency in the just-ended 2024 December elections.
The NDC described the action allegedly undertaken by the Savannah regional elections officer, as “unacceptable, illegal, and a violation” of the electoral processes that ensure transparency and fairness.
Adam Mutawakilu, National Democratic Congress Parliamentary Candidate for Damongo constituency said, allegations have been made against the municipal electoral director, who reportedly removed ballot papers from several polling stations without explanation and accountability.
He added that the collation of results in the Damongo constituency was suspended in the early hours of Sunday, December 8, 2024, between the hours of 1:30 and 2:00 am, and has not resumed to date.
Results from several polling stations in the Constituency have not been collated, making any declaration premature and invalid.
“Mr. Jackson, the Savannah regional elections officer, who is not the returning officer for the Damongo constituency, purportedly declared results in a clandestine manner within his office, in the absence of the National Democratic Congress agents for a parliamentary candidate. We demand within the next 24 hours to act upon our request of a petition, failing which we will take the necessary legal actions, including criminal action, against you and your office.
“We demand a full investigation into allegations that the municipal electoral director removed ballot papers from several polling stations without explanation. We demand accountability and immediate steps taken to address the discrepancies.”
The Chief of Damongo in the Savannah Region, Damongo Wura Kelly Seidu Boresa, called for a free and fair process at Damongo constituency, where they will have a member of parliament who can develop the area.
He expressed his readiness to work with Adam Mutawakilu, after receiving a petition from him.
The Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on December 9, successfully retained his parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections, after a declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources won a second term in office after a hard-fought contest.
He secured 16,222 votes, defeating his main challenger, Adam Mutawakilu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 14,425 votes.
A total of 30,713 valid votes were cast, with 356 rejected ballots.
Violence erupted in the Damongo Constituency following delays in the declaration of election results, culminating in the death of one person and the destruction of the EC office.
During the protests, frustrated youth stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Centre and set the EC office ablaze. The fire caused extensive damage to the building and its contents.
In the ensuing chaos, an NDC supporter, Sibannira Mukaila, was reportedly shot. He was rushed to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital but died shortly after receiving medical attention.
