Ghanaian researcher, Professor Smart Sarpong has defended his pre-election predictions, indicating that no researcher can provide a completely accurate forecast.

In his poll, he projected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead with 49.1%, while John Dramani Mahama would follow with 45.8%. However, the December 7 results showed John Mahama leading with 56.55%, while Dr Bawumia secured 41.61%.

In an interview with Channel One News, Professor Sarpong acknowledged the outcome and noted that valuable lessons have been learned from the experience.

“No poll is expected to be 100% accurate so researchers are available to submit themselves to reviews between the presented and actual outcome. For example, in this particular case, you realise that no researcher got it right. You can only talk about proximity, who was close to what but in terms of right, nobody got it right. My good friend and brother who I will congratulate, Mussa Dankwah got it quite close but still couldn’t get it right.

“He predicted a minimum of 50.1% and a maximum of 54% with an average of 52 %, but the outcome is 56%. For me, all fell short because of the unexpected low turnout and lessons have been learnt going forward. We will improve in the next opportunity that comes,” he stated.
