Retired Security Analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye has urged Ghanaians to remain calm amidst the growing incidents of violence and clashes following the December 7 elections.
Colonel Aboagye emphasized the need for the Ghana Police Service to act decisively in addressing the unrest and holding those instigating chaos accountable.
He highlighted a historical pattern of post-election disturbances in Ghana, referencing similar occurrences in previous election years.
“It started in 2000 when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) handed over power to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NPP foot soldiers did what is happening today. It happened in 2008 and 2016. In 2016, it went one layer up that foot soldiers including military, police, and civilians marched themselves to Flag Staff House or Jubilee House and we recall that one police was brutalised.
“People were seizing cars in traffic over the years when administrations had changed so that is what is happening, i.e. the National Security architecture, the regular one. So because the state was not prepared, they provided that window from Sunday to Monday to Tuesday to evolve into what we are seeing.
“Secondly, some people are opportunists and thus exploit loopholes and gaps. If we do not have the facts, we cannot substantively say that everybody involved is NDC. There may be criminals who are also buying into this narrative”, he stated.
The Ghana Police Service has deployed extra personnel as a measure to deal with the increasing cases of post-electoral violence.
This follows the National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters’ alleged involvement in the ongoing vandalism of state properties in certain parts of the country in the aftermath of the December 7 elections.
More than 100 suspects alleged to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been arrested in connection with looting and vandalism at various state institutions following the victory of the NDC in the December 7 elections.
Places such as Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGCL) headquarters in Accra, the Forestry Commission depot in Achimota, Bono Regional Forestry Commission offices as well as the headquarters of Metro Mass Transit Limited were besieged by individuals suspected to be supporters of the NDC.
However, personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces successfully thwarted an attempted takeover of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
