The United States has extended its congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama following the Electoral Commission’s announcement of his electoral victory on Monday, December 9, 2024.

In a statement signed by Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State, the U.S. government commended the Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society organisations, and the nation’s security forces for ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

The U.S. also acknowledged Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s historic achievement as Ghana’s first female vice president.

Despite these achievements, the U.S. expressed concern over reports of isolated incidents of violence during the election period, which resulted in at least four fatalities. Condolences were extended to the victims’ families, alongside a call for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.

“We are aware of reports of isolated incidents of violence and at least four confirmed deaths. The United States extends our condolences to the families of those killed and urges a full investigation and accountability.

“The United States is proud of our enduring partnership and friendship with the people and government of Ghana. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to carry our historic relationship into the future,” the statement read.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia also received praise for his early acceptance of the results. This gesture, according to the US, is a testament to Ghana’s deepening democratic culture.
