Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have blocked roads near the Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) using an electricity pole, intensifying tensions around the declaration of the Ablekuma North Constituency results.
The protest stems from frustrations over the police’s refusal to allow NDC supporters into the EC premises. The blockage caused temporary disruptions, but the police quickly intervened, compelling the protesters to remove the obstruction.
The NDC supporters had converged at the EC office to demand the immediate declaration of the Ablekuma North results. Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have claimed victory in what has been described as one of the most fiercely contested parliamentary races in the 2024 elections.
The Electoral Commission reported the loss of some pink sheets during the collation process. As a result, officials are relying on data provided by both parties to complete the tally. So far, 219 pink sheets have been consolidated, but 61 remain outstanding, delaying the final announcement.
The prolonged situation has heightened tensions among party supporters, prompting a significant police presence at the regional collation centre to maintain law and order. Authorities have urged calm as they work to finalize and declare the results.
Both parties remain resolute in their claims, with party officials and supporters closely monitoring the ongoing tally. The outcome is critical in shaping the parliamentary balance of power in the new administration.
