Samuel George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has declared that the “reign of tyranny” by Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has come to an end.
George’s comments follow rising tensions over the delayed declaration of results for the Ablekuma North Parliamentary election.
It is alleged that EC Chairperson Jean Mensa ordered a suspension of the declaration of the election results for the constituency, sparking frustration and criticism from political parties and the public.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, December 10, George noted that “Whether they go up or down, whether Jean Mensa or Bossman Asare walk with their leg or head we will do the declaration today.
“It will happen today because you see let me tell you something Jean Mensa must know that her reign of tyranny has come to an end. It has come to an end. She must abide by the law. Show me anywhere in CI 127 that gives Jean Mensa the power to put the declaration on hold. She has no such power.
“Jean Mensa is acting unconstitutionally, she’s acting capriciously, she’s acting arbitrarily she is acting maliciously and we will not accept that reign of tyranny.”
Meanwhile, supporters of the NDC earlier blocked roads at the Accra Regional Office of the EC with an electricity pole. Their actions are in protest against the police’s refusal to permit them into the premises of the EC. The police have since compelled them to remove the blockage.
NDC supporters have gathered at the Electoral Commission to demand the declaration of the Ablekuma North Constituency results. The NDC and NPP managed to consolidate 219 pink sheets yesterday, with 61 still outstanding.
Both parties are claiming victory in a fiercely contested race. The EC lost some pink sheets and has therefore relied on both parties to tally its results.
The situation has been prolonged, leading to rising tensions. The police are present at the regional collation center to enforce law and order.
