Tragedy struck in the Damongo Constituency of the Savannah Region after a violent protest at the Damongo Municipal Collation Centre resulted in the death of one person and the destruction of the Electoral Commission (EC) office.
The incident occurred when a group of angry youth, frustrated by delays in the declaration of election results, set the EC office on fire. The blaze caused extensive damage to the building and its contents.
During the chaos, an NDC supporter, Sibannira Mukaila, was reportedly shot. He was rushed to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo but succumbed to his injuries shortly after receiving medical attention.
In response to the violence, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 individuals believed to be involved in the incident, including the arson attack on the EC office.
The National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have strongly condemned the violent actions, urging calm and restraint among residents.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the unrest was fueled by growing agitation over the delay in announcing the election results. The enraged youth stormed the EC office, and in a bid to express their frustration, set it ablaze. The fire quickly engulfed the entire structure, leaving it in ruins.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident while calling for peace to prevent further escalation.
