There is heightened tension at the Eastern Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) despite the presence of heavy police reinforcement.
Party leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), along with their respective parliamentary candidates for the Nsawam Adoagyiri constituency, Fume Selorm Philibert (NDC) and Frank Annoh-Dompreh (NPP), are both contesting the parliamentary election results for the constituency.
Reports allege that over 100 pink sheets—both original and duplicates—from several polling stations in the Nsawam Adoagyiri constituency were destroyed during a scuffle at the district collation centre on Friday.
At 10 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, the NDC held a press briefing, citing their collation of results, and declared victory in the Nsawam Adoagyiri parliamentary race.
In response, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, held a counter-press briefing on Sunday, challenging the NDC’s claim and declaring himself the Member of Parliament-elect.
A police reinforcement team was deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation as tensions mounted. Meanwhile, stakeholders are awaiting the outcome of a closed-door meeting between the EC, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, and the NDC’s regional leadership.
In a related development, Channel One News has confirmed that the results declared by the EC for the Fanteakwa North Constituency are also being challenged by the New Patriotic Party, adding to the growing list of disputed outcomes in the 2024 elections.
