Baba Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a landmark victory in the Okaikwei Central parliamentary race, unseating the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Patrick Boamah.
Sadiq’s win is particularly significant as it represents a major shift in the Greater Accra Region, a stronghold of the NPP for several years.
The results saw Baba Sadiq earn 15,383 votes, narrowly edging out Patrick Boamah, who secured 14,949 votes. However, the results represent 78 percent of the results declared.
The race was closely contested, with both candidates campaigning vigorously for the support of the electorate.
In his victory speech, Baba Sadiq expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Okaikwei Central for their trust and support.
He acknowledged the hard work of his opponent, Patrick Boamah, but emphasized that the constituency was ready for a new direction.
“I don’t think Patrick Boamah is a bad person. I don’t think he has done his best for the constituency. But I believe that the constituents are now looking for a younger, dynamic, and innovative leader to bring fresh ideas and revitalise the development conversation in the constituency,” Sadiq said.
The victory marks a turning point for the NDC, which now looks set to strengthen its presence in a region long dominated by the NPP.
Sadiq, who campaigned on a platform of youth empowerment and infrastructure development, has vowed to deliver on his promises to the people of Okaikwei Central.
With this win, the NDC has gained a foothold in an important part of the capital, and the focus now shifts to how Sadiq will address the issues that matter most to his constituents, including road infrastructure, education, and employment opportunities. His victory also contributes to the broader success of the NDC in the 2024 elections.
