In a landmark development following the 2024 general elections, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially conceded defeat in the presidential race.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its flagbearer, acknowledged the outcome of the elections in a heartfelt address, congratulating former President John Dramani Mahama on his victory.
Ghanaians went to the polls on Saturday 7, to elect a president and members of parliament. Early results from the Electoral Commission and various media outlets indicated a strong lead for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, with significant gains in several swing constituencies and key strongholds of the NPP.
In his address to the nation on Sunday, December 8, Dr Bawumia revealed that he had called Mr Mahama to formally concede and congratulate him as President-elect. “I have spoken to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him on his victory. The people of Ghana have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian people for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed his commitment to the country’s democratic principles.
Meanwhile, preliminary parliamentary results suggest a major shift in the political landscape, with the NDC gaining a majority in Parliament. Key NPP strongholds such as Sekondi and Adansi Asokwa flipped to the opposition, reflecting a broader sentiment of change among the electorate.
Dr Bawumia assured his supporters that the NPP would regroup and emerge stronger. The Electoral Commission is expected to officially certify the final results in the coming hours, but it is clear that Ghana’s democratic process has once again triumphed, ushering in a new chapter for the nation.
