The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama to intervene and ensure his supporters and the NDC uphold peace and order following Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
The NPP has alleged that elements within the NDC are instigating unrest in constituencies where the NPP claims to have won, but the results are being contested by their opponents.
At a press conference held on Sunday, December 8, 2024, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, expressed concerns about what the party described as “disruptive actions” by some NDC members in parts of the country.
“We are calling on President-elect Mahama to exercise leadership by ensuring his supporters respect the democratic process and maintain calm. These actions threaten to undermine the peace and stability of our nation,” Kodua stated.
The NPP also urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to take decisive action to maintain law and order.
The call comes amid rising tensions in some constituencies where tight contests have sparked disputes over the final outcomes.
The NPP reiterated its commitment to respecting the electoral process and urged all political stakeholders to do the same.
The comments come after the Ghana Police Service arrested 12 individuals in connection with various electoral-related acts of violence, including the destruction of the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damongo.
The arrest follows an incident in the Damongo Municipal Constituency, where a group of angry youth set fire to the EC office in protest over the delay in the declaration of election results. The fire caused significant damage to the building and its contents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the youth, frustrated by the prolonged wait for the election results, stormed the EC office and set it ablaze. The fire spread rapidly, consuming the entire structure.
In a statement, the Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, confirmed the arrests and provided details of the preliminary investigation.
