The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on Ghanaians to remain patient as it continues the process of collating and verifying election results.
At a press conference on Sunday, December 8, Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC and the National Returning Officer for the Presidential Election addressed the public to provide clarity on the intricate process involved in declaring results.
Her clarification follows pressure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which had earlier called on the National Peace Council (NPC) to urge the EC to expedite the collation and announcement of the results.
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the NDC, expressed frustration at the delay and stressed the need for timely communication from the EC. He further emphasized that the extended delay was causing growing unrest among supporters.
In her address, Jean Mensa explained that the collation process is thorough and crucial for ensuring transparency. She outlined that the results from the regional level are transmitted via fax to the national collation centre, where party agents are present to verify the figures against their own records.
These results are then projected as provisional figures and undergo further review by the Commission before being formally endorsed.
Mensa assured the public that the EC is working diligently within the prescribed 72-hour period to ensure the results are accurate and credible before the final announcement.
“I would like to urge us as citizens to exercise patience. It’s just been 23 hours since the close of polls. The process is elaborate, it is inclusive, it involves the political parties and observers at every step and the whole idea is to ensure that what comes up at the end of the day is a bottom-up approach involving all the agents at all levels,” she stated.
