The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has criticized the use of insults and violence as political tactics, emphasising their ineffectiveness in winning votes or fostering healthy democratic engagement.

Kathleen Addy, chairperson of the NCCE, expressed these sentiments during an interview on Channel One TV amid the ongoing 2024 general elections.

She urged politicians to prioritise constructive messaging and visionary leadership over divisive rhetoric.

“We are over 30 years in our fourth republic and we really should have outgrown some of these things by now. We should be in a position where politicians do not feel that they have to poison public commentary and atmosphere with negativity to get heard.

“If you have a message or vision, the idea is to get people to buy into that. I don’t know how insults help that. I don’t know how deploying violent tactics gets you more votes,” she stated.
