The Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga has stepped in to have police release a gentleman who was arrested for snapping his ballot after voting.

He argues that there is no law preventing voters from taking pictures of the ballot after voting. According to Agalga, what the law frowns upon is the publishing of a picture of a ballot cast.

His comments follow the arrest of a young man for taking a picture of his ballot at the Goldema KG polling station in Wiaga in the Builsa North Constituency.

“The secrecy that is required does not mean you cannot take a snapshot. The problem is when you publish it. The act of publishing breaches the secrecy rule. I can have very explicit material on my phone.

“So far as I don’t publish them, my secrecy is protected. I think on that occasion, the police officer was too much in haste. An indecent haste led to the arrest and detention because there was no evidence that the man took steps to publish”, he stated.
