President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to exercise their right to vote peacefully and with dignity on Saturday, December 7, as the nation heads to the polls.
The President emphasized that voting is not just a right but also a collective duty toward ensuring a prosperous and peaceful Ghana.
Addressing the nation on Friday, December 6, President Akufo-Addo noted that “Each one of us should go out and do his or her duty to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Ghana and vote freely for your preferred candidate. Do this in peace and dignity.
“It is an individual and collective responsibility. Go and vote. You owe it to Ghana and to yourself.”
“But we should never forget that the flame of freedom needs to be protected and constantly refuelled. Elections are at the heart of a democracy and we qualify to be counted among mature democracies after 8 successful elections.
“It is not surprising that our country is held up as a beacon of democratic stability in Africa. We should be justly proud of this and do everything we can to protect and uphold this status.”
The 2024 election is the ninth under Ghana’s Fourth Republic and is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the nation’s democratic history. It pits Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) against former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a closely contested race.
The election comes against the backdrop of economic challenges, including post-pandemic recovery, high unemployment, rising inflation, and public debt.
While the NPP highlights digitalization, economic reforms, and infrastructure development as its key achievements, the NDC has centred its campaign on rebuilding infrastructure, creating jobs, and addressing socioeconomic inequalities.
The stakes are high, with both parties vying for control of the presidency and 275 parliamentary seats. The outcome will determine the direction of policies aimed at addressing Ghana’s pressing challenges.
