The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of robust security arrangements ahead of the final political rallies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2024, in Accra.
The NPP’s rally will take place at the UG Sports Directorate park near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, while the NDC’s rally will be held at Zurack Park in Madina.
Despite concerns over the proximity of the two venues along the Accra-Madina stretch, which raises the risk of clashes between supporters, both parties opted to maintain their locations, citing political disadvantages in relocating.
To ensure peace and order, the Police have implemented the following measures:
- Designated Routes for Supporters
- NPP Supporters:
- From Adenta: Turn left at Ritz Junction, proceed to the American House, and continue via Opkonglo to the rally venue.
- From Dome: Turn right at Haatso Junction, follow the route to GIMPA, and proceed to the University of Ghana.
- NDC Supporters:
- From Tetteh Quarshie: Turn right at Shiashie, continue via Lagos Avenue and Trinity Avenue to UPSA, then proceed to Madina-Accra Highway and turn right to Zurack Park.
- From Dome: Turn left at KFC Junction, head towards the Wisconsin area, and proceed to the venue.
- From Adenta: Supporters may use any suitable route to reach the rally grounds.
- NPP Supporters:
- Road Closures
- The North Legon and Memuna roads will be closed to general traffic to facilitate the NDC rally. Other roads will remain open, but commuters should expect heavy traffic and are encouraged to use alternative routes.
- Restrictions on Groups and Motorbikes
- Groups of supporters must adhere to approved routes and are prohibited from straying beyond them.
- Supporters on motorbikes will not be permitted near the rally venues to minimize congestion and enhance security.
- Police Deployment
- Officers will be stationed along all routes to assist supporters and ensure smooth movement to the rally grounds.
The Police also urged the public to report any security concerns via the Election Emergency Command Centre toll-free number, 0800311311.
As the rallies mark the final leg of the campaign season, the Police called on the parties and their supporters to maintain the decorum shown throughout their campaigns, ensuring peaceful and orderly events.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law, order, and security during the rallies.
