Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah says persons who held office before they defected to Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change but have returned to the NPP will not be reinstated, saying the party’s principles and values are strong and clear on that.

This follows reports of over 500 members of the Movement for Change, a group of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, declaring their support for the NPP’s presidential candidate ahead of Saturday’s elections.

The group expressed dissatisfaction with the events surrounding the departure of Alan Kyerematen from the NPP. However, they acknowledged that the newly formed Movement for Change lacks the organisational capacity and resources to secure victory in the upcoming polls.

In a statement, members emphasised their decision to back the NPP, highlighting the party’s track record and potential to deliver development compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview with Channel One News, Ahiagbah said the returnee defected members were welcome to the party.

But he noted “I am not sure about accepting people back into what office they held before their defection or their choice to work with the Movement for Change. What I know for sure is that those allegiances that people owe to the New Patriotic Party are principles.

“They cannot find that principle anywhere operative so coming home was something we knew would happen. The balance of the people who have come back is a symbol of the fact that the party is strong and resolute. In terms of membership, they will be in good standing but except for being in office and having to return to those offices, I am not too sure.

“The conversations I have had about that is that the party embraces them, and it is their natural home, so they are welcome.”
