The UN Resident Coordinator for Ghana, Charles Abani, has called on Ghanaians to ensure that the 2024 general elections are conducted peacefully and transparently.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Abani highlighted Ghana’s role as a model for democratic governance in Africa. He stressed the importance of a successful electoral process in reinforcing the country’s reputation and inspiring other nations.

Abani also cautioned citizens against actions that could jeopardize national peace, urging all stakeholders to prioritize unity and fairness during the elections.

“At a time like this where we see a lot of thoughts -is democracy working the way it needs to work? Is it providing the basis for general prosperity? It’s important that Ghana succeeds in holding an election, and to be seen to be transparent, to be peaceful, to be able to continue that journey in spite of the challenges.

“And those challenges sit globally, continental, in the sub-region and of course here in Ghana itself. In essence, you’re a kind of reference point and a beacon.

He encouraged Ghanaians to facilitate seamless elections, notwithstanding the pressure from external sources.

“I think beyond disappointments, it starts with a trend that we don’t want. There’s pressure on you but remember this election is about that map and people here in Ghana. It’s important Ghanaians focus on Ghana. Everybody says it’s a cliche but Ghana has to win.”
