The Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne, has dismissed claims that the New Kejetia Market will be closed on Saturday, December 7, to pressure traders into voting in the upcoming general elections.
The allegations, made in a statement circulated by some disgruntled traders at the market, claimed that the Mayor ordered the market’s closure at the request of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), following a meeting with queen mothers in Kumasi.
Speaking to Eyewitness News on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Sam Pyne refuted the claims, stating that no such directive had been issued by his office.
“We have not made any statement. I am putting it on record. Neither the KMA nor the Kumasi City Market Limited took any such decision to close down the market,” he stated.
“The decision from the REGSEC is to protect every vital installation within the Kumasi metropolis and the region before, during, and after the election. Even if we are going to take such a decision, it is going to be official.”
