Over 500 members of the Movement for Change, a group of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, have declared their support for the NPP’s presidential candidate ahead of Saturday’s elections.
The group expressed dissatisfaction with the events surrounding the departure of Alan Kyerematen from the NPP. However, they acknowledged that the newly formed Movement for Change lacks the organizational capacity and resources to secure victory in the upcoming polls.
In a statement, members emphasised their decision to back the NPP, highlighting the party’s track record and potential to deliver development compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The endorsement is seen as a boost for the NPP as it seeks to consolidate support in the final days before the elections.
They have pledged to mobilize their members nationwide to vote for the NPP and ensure the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, wins the elections.
Addressing journalists in Kumasi, on December 4, Anthony Ashmon Cobbinah, spokesperson for the group, said, “We were proud of NPP and due to one or two things we joined Alan Kyerematen. Some of us were not pleased with the treatment he received we thought he should have been the next NPP’s flagbearer.
“But when we went, looking at our preparation and things, we realised that we’re not prepared, even our resources are limited. But sitting idle for a party like NDC to take over Ghana, we have to quickly return and join our proud NPP.
“We want to tell entire Ghanaians that we went to Movement for Change but we have come back to our old party, almost about 500 members, we declare our votes and full support for Bawumia and NAPO [Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh-NPP running mate].”
They pleaded with the party to pardon them for their action and welcome them back.
“We plead with the party to forgive us, consider us and forget, whatever we did wrong, especially our Ashanti regional chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called ‘Wontumi.”
The group months ago defected from the party to join the Movement for Change, citing several reasons.
On April 22, some young politicians across the country who had previously defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to join Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change announced their return to the NPP.
Led by former NPP parliamentary candidate aspirant for Adentan, Alfred Ababio Kumi, the group admitted that leaving the NPP was a mistake.
