The National Okada Union of Ghana has officially declared its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the country gears up for the December 7 general elections.
At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, the union expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing neglect by the current administration and their failure to deliver on promises made to Okada riders.
According to the union, the NDC’s commitments to their concerns influenced their decision.
Speaking on behalf of the union, Communications Officer Akpanaba Solomon outlined key grievances against the NPP, particularly Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He accused the government of sidelining Okada riders, failing to fulfil its campaign promise to replace motorbikes with vehicles, and ignoring the union in its 2024 campaign strategy.
“The NDC and John Mahama have been consistently committed towards our concerns and proposals. The leader of NDC repeated his pledge to regularise Okada in 2025 when sworn in as president. He further commits to providing the enabling environment for training, retraining and monitoring of riders in Ghana to ensure discipline and compliance with rules and regulations to reduce accidents.
“They promised again that under the next NDC government, all commercial motorbike riders will be operating under recognised unions including tricycles. The NDC has also promised to invest in the assembling of electronic powered bikes which will be sold to riders at subsidised prices,” he stated.
