The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has criticised the Akufo-Addo administration, claiming that Ghanaians have faced severe economic hardships over the past eight years.

According to him, the economic challenges have not only affected those in the lower-income bracket but have also significantly impacted the middle class.

Speaking during an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Kwetey highlighted the decline in several sectors under the current government.

He cited the collapse of banks and microfinance institutions, widespread job losses, and significant reductions in the investments of pensioners as key indicators of economic mismanagement.

He further criticized the growing debt burden accrued by the administration, which he argued has weakened the local currency and fueled rising inflation.

“It’s been 8 years of real economic difficulty, this is not just affecting the lower income bracket, it’s affecting the middle class as well, the kind of erosion that has happened in real income for the people whether you are working or not, it’s been massive. And this has been so palpable that for the first time in our history, even pensioners were at the receiving end of the difficulty.

“Some of these are coming from the previous 4 years, the banking crisis, I mean the shutdown of banks, loss of jobs, microfinance and closure,  and how people lost jobs and so on.

“These are accumulative effects and the worst part of it is debts, it has been strangulating debts, it affects the currency, inflation, and general well-being of our people.”

He articulated significant worries regarding the insufficient job prospects available for young people.
